How to Handle Obesity among Young School Children

by Heide Lynne Canlasin Health / Weight Loss    (submitted 2011-11-13)

It is said that next to smoking, obesity is the second major cause of death among people worldwide. It is unfortunate, too, that obesity has become a prevalent problem among young children. Wrong food choices and lack of parental guidance on a healthy diet are the top causes of obesity among school children.

Based on actual studies, more than 20% of teenagers in the United States show signs of heart related diseases while 25% of most common cancer cases are caused by obesity and overweight problems.

It is not good to see high school students aged between 14 to 17 years old weighing as much as 200 pounds or more. Most kids do think it is cool to wear baggy jeans and oversize shirts to school but if you are a ten-year old child weighing 150 pounds - or three times heavier than your average weight - that is not cute at all!

It is not yet too late though. Obesity problem can be outdone. To help combat obesity, parents must be conscious with what food they are serving their families, especially their kids. Correct eating habits and promotion of healthy, nutritious, and balanced home-cooked meals are better than fast food junks like fatty burgers, oily fries, and liters of carbonated soda. Introducing new and yummy recipes to your dining table and taking out junk food in your cupboards and refrigerators are just a few steps in making the big change.

Aside from changing eating patterns from fast food diet to healthy home-cooked meals, parents ought to encourage their children to do some outdoor activities, as well. Doing stuffs like sports and outdoor activities are fun and effective ways of promoting positive attitude among children regarding physical fitness.

Sports and outdoor activities can be good alternatives to computer games, encouraging children to play physically and with lots of movements, rather than spending hours and hours playing with their play stations while munching big bags of potato chips and gulping down bottles of soda.

Introduce your children to local sports programs and including them to regular family bonding activities can be fun. This is the first step towards changing the attitude of your obese child towards physical fitness, social activity, and closer family relationships.

Just because your child is still young, you wouldn't be concerned about his weight. Make sure you monitor what he eats and you know what his lifestyle is. As a parent, guide him towards a fit and healthy life. About the Author
