The Potentially Harmful Complications of Plant based Dieting Products

by Ilona Robertsin Health / Weight Loss    (submitted 2011-11-16)

The past ten to fifteen years has seen an explosion of over the counter dieting and fat loss products. The appeal to products which are more natural will never be lost on people who provide these types of diet products. Practically anything that contains references to all-natural or herbal will certainly draw attention. But there is a strong word of caution to people with these programs. An unsuspecting public is part of the problem because people do have a tendency to automatically trust something which is natural, or herbal. That presumption often leads them to use it having a high degree of trust. Just about any natural, or herbal, ingredient can have adverse reactions when used, and there are other issues linked to standard medicines. Still, yet another situation concerns the person who has a predisposition to react badly to a certain herb.

There is yet another major point to remember about herbal compounds in diet pills. A lot of all the natural products available have not been put through medical analysis. Sometimes you'll see work references to studies, but take care that the study has not been bought and paid for. Obviously it really is a distinct conflict for both parties concerned. So it is no real shock when the results are optimistic and the statements are terrific. There will be many ethical challenges involved in that scenario as is plain to see. Consumers who use these products are taking enormous risk, possibly and according to the exact ingredients.

Out of all the so-called herbal diet supplements over the years, hardly any have been seriously studied. Ephedra does indeed actually work when joined with caffeine. The issue there is ephedra had very severe side effects for some people, and that brought about it to be forbidden in the US. Most recently a new replacement emerged, Hoodia was launched on the market amidst significant amounts of marketing and buzz. This item, which is a plant derivative out of South Africa, has been examined to some degree. However you will discover important potential issues for people with certain health concerns. Hoodia will block several natural feedback systems involving hunger as well as thirst. If you've got any medical conditions, and even if you don't, you must find out all you can before using it.

Here is a great example of what can happen with unproven, untested herbal fat reduction ingredients. A fat loss herbal product was used in Belgium which led to kidney failure for approximately a hundred people. Around fifty or so more men and women encountered damage to their kidneys. Also, either cancerous or precancerous signs were present in thirty seven people who had a kidney taken out. After investigation, it was discovered that the manufacturer made an error during the process and used the incorrect active herbal ingredient.

We do believe there are genuine and effective uses for natural ingredients. However, obviously any person should exercise extreme caution. Unfortunately there will always be a portion of people who will never exercise good prudence in these situations.
